How to Make the Holidays Special While on Assignment

November 21 / Posted by Christi Hintz

We know it can be difficult at times when you’re on assignment during the holidays. That’s why we wanted to write an article addressing the subject, and give you some ideas to help make the holiday season special no matter where you are. Here are some of our favorite ways to keep the holiday cheer going, even if you’re miles away from friends and family.

Keep In Touch

It’s a great time to be a travel nurse because of the technology that is available to help you keep in touch. Here are a few ideas for how you can be part of your family’s Christmas even when you’re not there in person:

  • Plan to video call your friends and family during the holidays so that you can still spend time with them.
  • You can ask a family member to set up a video call on their phone and take you around Christmas morning so that you can see the Christmas festivities.
  • Video call your family during family traditions like trimming the tree so that you can do those sorts of things together. You can put up your decorations while they put up theirs!

Make Plans With Work Friends

If you’re in a place where there are many other travel nurses, invite them to celebrate the holidays with you. Many of them may also be missing home, and will welcome the opportunity to celebrate this special time and make new connections. If you’re making friends with nurses who aren’t away from their loved ones, invite them instead to take part in local traditions leading up to holidays. Ask around or do some research to find out what fun activities the city you’re in puts on during the holidays!

Work the Holiday Shift

It might seem counterintuitive at first, but working the Christmas day shifts can be incredibly rewarding. You’ll be taking care of people who need you on Christmas, and you’ll have the opportunity to make their day a little brighter. You’ll also be giving another nurse the opportunity to celebrate the day with their family.

There are opportunities all around to provide service during the holidays. This is a great way to give back to the community that is hosting you during your travels, and a great way to keep your spirits up when you start to miss your loved ones.

Fly Family Out

Just because you’re on assignment, doesn’t necessarily mean you have to forgo holiday celebrations with your family. Fly out one or two of your loved ones and enjoy Christmas together in a new setting. This can be even more fun if you’re on assignment somewhere especially interesting or different from where your friends and family live.

Some nurses choose to skip taking assignments during the holidays, while others actually find that they like their holiday assignments the best. Have you found yourself on assignment over the holidays? Did you enjoy it? How do you make the holidays special when you’re away from home? Leave a comment and help out another travel nurse.
