So you’ve arrived in your new city, and you’re ready to make new friends and explore new places. One of the best ways to get started on both fronts is to talk to the local nurses about their city. You’ll discover new and interesting perspectives about the city and it’s a great way to break the ice with your new coworkers.

You might already have a few questions that you like to ask locals when you travel, but if you’re not sure what to ask, here are a few ideas:

“What’s Your Favorite Thing About Living Here?”

The great thing about this question is that everyone will have a slightly different answer for you, and you’ll get a better idea of what is great about this new place that you’re visiting. Try to get an answer to this question from as many people as you can, and you’ll learn all sorts of things about the city that you might not have thought to ask about.

“What Do You Do For Fun?”

It’s easy to look up all the fun things to do in a city, but if you really want to experience the unique things a place has to offer, ask the people that live there. They’ll be able to let you know about the things they’ve done and seen that they can’t wait to revisit.

“What Are the Best Local Restaurants?”

It’s hard to get a straight answer from the internet on what the locals in any given city like to eat, because it’s hard to parse out genuine popularity from advertising. But ask the local nurses where they love to eat, and they’re bound to have a few suggestions of places that have great atmosphere, great food, or unique offerings.

This question is also a great jumping off point to get to know people better. Good food is a great thing to bond over, and you might get some meal invitations from people who are excited to show you their favorite spot or get you in on a workplace tradition.

“What Are the Best Running Trails/Locations for Outdoor Sports?”

If you’re the kind of person who likes to go on a run to get your exercise, clear your mind, and take in the local scenery, you might just find the perfect spot by asking your new coworkers where they like to go running. If you have another outdoor sport you enjoy, you could also consider asking about the best hiking trails, lakes, or ski resorts.

“Where’s the Best Place to Shop For Groceries?”

You can get more specific with this question if you’re more concerned with price, quality of food, or selection. Often the best places to shop are local or at least regional. You might get some good suggestions for specialty shops like butchers, international grocers, and farmers markets.

“What’s the Craziest Thing You’ve Done or Eaten Here?”

For the more adventurous, you can start by asking your new coworkers about the things their city has to offer that are… more strange. You might not always get answers to this question, but the ones you do get will be interesting.
